Foundational Principle #1: Repentance from Dead Works
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works….-Hebrews 6:1-3
Notes:
As part of the study of principles in Hebrews 6:1-3, the first foundational principle outlined is repentance from dead works. The author of Hebrews mentions dead works again in Hebrews ch.9, but in reference to the works of the Mosaic Law. It could stand to reason then that since this letter was written to believing Jews, repentance from dead works could mean turning away from the Law of Moses, and replacing it with faith in Christ (principle #2). However, a dead work in a general sense, is anything that is not done for God’s glory. When we were in the world and the world was in us, all our deeds and actions were for our glory, not God’s. But it is for this reason of glorifying God (good works) that we are saved. (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Willing to Take the Challenge?
God is more concerned with the quality of person’s work than the quantity. Anything not done for His glory will be as wood, hay, and stubble and will be consumed by His fire. When Jesus returns, He will render us according to our works (how we glorified Him, and did His will). Even for the most sacrificial of people: policemen, firefighters, or doctors, whose very jobs are to help and save people’s lives, if not done for the Kingdom of God and in love, will be as filthy rags. In the words of Jesus, you are to “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.”
